I have been away on my first holiday in eight years ! I had the most amazing 3 days at the Embroiderer’s Guild Summer School in East Yorkshire. The tutor, Jenny Adin-Christie, was from the Royal School of Needlework and the whole weekend was spent focussing on my very favourite technique of Goldwork – what could be better ? I was getting up at 5 am and going to bed around midnight – this wasn’t compulsory – just me wanting to make the most of the time there !
I went with my friend Sue and we both enjoyed spending 3 days learning from such an expert in this field. We only broke off from the stitching to go and sample the fabulous food provided in the dining room – heaven !!
Mmm, still a fair way to go with this, but I’ll post a picture once it’s completed !
Back in Elland, Mel and her crew from Hull came over for a day learning how to create applique pictures. We had some stunning results, just look at Mel’s recreation of her photo of a path through the woods …..
… can’t wait to see this once it’s finished.
Wendy’s poppy field was looking good too …..
…. as was Margaret’s lovely house ….
Our very own Beckie has been busy too, she has really got addicted to Crazy Patchwork. She brought this cushion panel to show me this week – it is for a friend’s birthday, lucky friend !
…….. I am beginning to wonder if it’s a mistake to store my fabric at Tom’s house, it keeps disappearing ! We don’t want her to get distracted from her baking either, do we ?!
This Saturday I spent the day at the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield. No, I haven’t got a new job going down the pit, the Yorkshire Rug Group meet there and had invited me to teach a workshop on ‘Hooked and Prodded Landscapes’. As they were all proficient at rug hooking we were able to spend time experimenting with different materials and techniques to create more textural effects and interesting pieces.
My friend Sue came to help and even managed to do a bit of work on her own rag rug landscape.
So, a few updates on pieces started on previous courses, firstly Sally-Anne’s hooked rug wall-hanging of Pendle Hill (plus witch flying by !) ….
…Then the fabulous seahorse Steph started on one of my Goldwork courses …. the design is by Rajmahal …..
…. amazing !!!
Karen from Shropshire regularly attends here for a day stitching with her Mum and sister. She has sent me a picture of a ‘Memory Bear’ she has made with fabric from a relative who has recently passed away.
I think this is a lovely idea, I have previously had groups coming for the day to do similar projects with clothing of a loved one, or to make something using their children’s out-grown clothing which they didn’t want to part with but knew wouldn’t get worn again. People have made rugs, patchwork throws, crazy patchwork and other items. I have a family group coming here next week to do a similar session, so might suggest the bear idea too.
And finally, I have had a couple of days out while we have had the lovely weather. Firstly, a day in Hebden Bridge with my friends Jackie and Mark. Mark and I proved very popular with the pigeons and ducks down by the river ! I think Jackie had run for cover by this stage !
and secondly, a beautiful day at Harlow Carr Gardens in Harrogate. Kev and I got enough inspiration for printing, drawing, stitching and rugging to last a lifetime !
